Despite a go slow by workers, Pikitup is working hard to collect refuse from its customers. The north and west parts of Joburg are worst affected.

PIKITUP is working hard to tackle the backlog of refuse removal in some parts of the city, a result of a “go-slow” by the entity’s workers.

Normal service is expected to resume as soon as possible

Pikitup spokesperson, Pansy Oyedele, said management was in talks with union representatives to find solutions to issues relating to work conditions.

“Refuse removal services in parts of Johannesburg remain under pressure but Pikitup is confident that the backlogs of the past week will soon be eliminated,” said Oyedele.

The two depots have suffered heavily from the industrial action – in Randburg and Roodepoort. Residents in the northern and western parts of Johannesburg have been badly affected.

Oyedele said the workers were not completing their rounds in some parts of the city and deliberately left rubbish. “Pikitup will introduce alternative removal services in the areas where the backlogs are the largest should outstanding labour issues not be resolved soon,” said Oyedele.

Other depots that have experienced a disruption of services include Norwood, which services Parkhurst and Craighall, among other suburbs; Waterval, which services Linden and Blairgowrie, among others; and Avalon, which services Lenasia, Vlakfontein and Zacharia Park, among others.

“The expectation is that the backlogs will be erased when the normal removal services continue soon,” said Oyedele.

Collection is taking place in areas serviced by six depots – Central Camp, servicing the eastern and northern parts of Soweto; Zondi, servicing the west and south of Soweto; Selby, servicing the Johannesburg CBD; Southdale; Midrand; and Marlboro.

Pikitup’s garden sites will only take garden waste. General waste can be delivered directly to four sites:

  • Goudkoppies, Houthhammer Road, Devland;
  • Marie Louise, Dobsonville Road, Roodepoort;
  • Robinson Deep, Turffontein Road, Turffontein; and
  • Ennerdale, Old Lawley Road, Lawley.

“Pikitup again apologises to residents and businesses in affected areas for the inconvenience caused by a slowdown in services,” Oyedele said.
