Names of those with duplicated IDs made public

The Department of Home Affairs has made public the names of 29 000 people who share their ID number with someone else - in a bid to assist those with duplicated IDs.

Home Affairs Director-General Mkuseli Apleni said at a media briefing in Pretoria on Thursday, 3 May that the names of those affected had been put up on the department’s website – www.dha.gov.za– and that they would also be published in print media across the country from 8 May.

The names of those affected will be published in newspapers such as the Sowetan, The Star, Pretoria News, Cape Argus, The New Age, Daily Dispatch, The Herald, Die Burger, Diamond Fields Advertiser, Illanga, Volksblad, the Witness and Cape Times.

He urged those whose names appeared on the website and in the newspapers to go to their nearest Home Affairs office so that they could receive assistance.

“Due to security reasons the publication will include only the name, birth date and area of last known address,” Apleni said.

South Africans will also be able to check if they share an ID number with someone else on a SMS track and trace service. Citizens can send a SMS with the letter D (for duplicate) followed by their ID number to 32551. They will then receive a response informing them if they are one of those affected.

“The department will be increasing dedicated capacity of officials within the Civics Branch, charged with resolving these issues so that these cases can be dealt with effectively and efficiently,” he said.

Home Affairs offices will also have dedicated counters to help those affected.

Apleni said the department recognised that duplicate IDs caused grief to a number of South Africans and was committed to addressing the problem.

The first phase of the campaign to deal with duplicate IDs will target the 29 000 people who share their ID number with someone else. The second phase will focus on the other 83 000 who have more than one ID number.

Ext. "0" CLEANING CAMPAIGN

Dear Cosmo City Ext. "0" Residents,

We have agreed in our last community meeting that we embark on this exercise i.e. a cleaning campaign for our Extention. We hope that we will come out in large numbers and respond to this magnificent call.

In fact, there are those who were not bashful and afraid to express their feelings… and they pronounced with emphatic tones. This is long overdue!

So, the time to make it real has now arrived. See you there...

Cosmo City pupils face criminal charges

School children caught on video damaging two police vehicles at Cosmo City Secondary School, could face criminal charges.

The Basic Education Department said it will let the law take its course.

There were cheers and whistles as pupils in their school uniform vandalised the clearly marked police vans, while the officers were trying to disperse an angry mob only metres away.

The windows were shattered with stones and the doors ripped off.

The Basic Education Department’s Panyaza Lesufi said the pupils should face the full might of the law.

“If they choose to be thugs not learners, they must be treated like thugs,” he said.

Two nyalas and a Casper had to be called in Tuesday after the school children boycotted class yet again.

They want textbooks for everyone, proper sanitation and the dismissal of their principal for alleged maladministration.

Eskom Power Outages 27-07-2011

Colleagues,

There is no denying the fact that the power failures seems to be a recurrent problem and all the measures put in place by Eskom, as promised to remedy the situation seem not to be working. But I want to assure all that as a Committee for Ext 0 are on top of things.

We have been robustly engaging with the utility company to have the problem addressed in its entirety and one must out rightly point out that - the three feeders were installed to jack up the existing ones so as to spread power evenly to all those affected areas, especially if it was windy or raining, as this appeared to be the time when outages were experienced. That exercise has now been completed by Eskom as promised.

POWER OUTAGES TAKING PLACE DURING THE LAST TEN AND PAST FEW DAYS:Information coming out of Eskom is that blackouts happened simply because cables/copper was stolen. It looks like this problem of cable theft is ongoing and, we as a community together with Eskom are going to have to come up with a solution, as to how to have the problem tackled once and for all.

Last but not least. Good people on numerous occasions as a committee have made an urgent call to the whole residents of Ext 0 to attend community meetings but to no avail. It looks like there are people who are only being reactive, as they only wait for problems to surface and once this becomes the case, all of a sudden, they have got these huge e-mails to write with a litany of complaints. It does not work like that at all…

This is a two way stream: And as a committee we can only do so much (our part) and you as a resident have yours to play. Let us all be proactive and responsible people who are prepared to do something about the problems confronting us not only as individuals or families but the entire community of Ext 0 and the broader Cosmo City.

Eskom Outages

Dear Cosmo City Residents,

On behalf of the current acting Committee for Ext 0 and its incumbent portfolio Committees the problems identified pertaining to Electricity blackouts in our area are indeed annoying - more so to the honest users of this important source of energy. But I would humbly hasten to mention that the existing problems are huge and complex. Thanks to the previous Committee for going out of its way by taking a concerted effort, by having meetings with Eskom officials to have this perpetual problem resolved. And correspondence to that effect is attached, as proof to that endeavour. Once again many thanks for a job well done…

The current interim committee would have loved to have the community meeting this week, but as we all know that the Easter Weekend is almost upon us, the Committee has decided to reschedule the meeting for the 8^th of May as they deem this day to be most appropriate. Rest assured the issue will be revisited in that meeting as it will be one of the items comprising the Agenda.

So, for now we will certainly appreciate it, if we all remain cool and calm until a meeting on date mentioned has taken place. Immediately after that meeting, an official notification will be sent out advising of the resolution taken on the matter i.e. those who attended or never attended the meeting.

May we all have a blessed and a safe Easter, as we prepare ourselves for this memorable and honourable day, in the calendar of our year.
